How much does a school bag weigh in CP?

Your child is leaving kindergarten and will be entering primary school, and you're wondering how to equip them? Are you concerned about the weight of their future school bag and want to choose the right one for them?

It's true that the transition from kindergarten to primary school involves a change in teaching, which will include classroom work with textbooks, notebooks, or binders, and homework, generally in notebooks.

Your child will therefore have to carry textbooks, notebooks, and a pencil case for different subjects, in addition to their snack. They will be significantly more loaded than in kindergarten and will therefore need a good school bag to help them protect their back.

Let's take a look at the weight of a school bag in CP (first grade).

A well-loaded, well-filled school bag

A CP school bag will need to contain supplies such as a complete pencil case (pens, pencils, eraser, ruler, scissors, pencil sharpener, possibly a highlighter, whiteboard markers, and glue), felt-tip pens and colored pencils, a whiteboard, notebooks, binders, display folders, and a folder... There will certainly also be workbooks and/or textbooks.

In total, the contents of the school bag alone already weigh several kilograms. We recommend placing the heaviest items closest to the back to properly balance the weight.

What scientists say about school bag weight

Studies have been conducted to determine the acceptable weight a primary school child can carry without causing damage to their back.

It has been established that a weight of approximately 10% of their body mass is the maximum acceptable. For a CP child, whose weight will be around 20 kilograms on average, the loaded school bag should therefore not exceed 2 kg.

This is difficult to achieve, as it is already the weight of the supplies alone. To this, of course, is added the weight of the school bag itself.

Wheeled school bag: good idea or not?

One might be tempted by the choice of a wheeled school bag, but these are heavier than classic models, which is not a problem if they are pulled, although the posture is not exactly ideal.

However, certain situations will force the child to carry the school bag: climbing stairs to go to class, crossing gravel ground that prevents the school bag from rolling, getting on a school bus... This will ultimately force them to carry even more weight than if they had a model worn on their back.

The lightest possible school bag

One solution is to choose a good school bag that has wide, adjustable straps and interior compartments so that the weight is best distributed over the child's body and they carry their belongings as comfortably as possible.

Above all, prioritize a lightweight school bag so as not to overload the child. Classic school bags can weigh several kilograms, so it is important to turn to modern models designed to be as light as possible.

Some models weigh less than a kilogram.

Next, choose supplies carefully, selecting lightweight items and only putting what is necessary in the school bag.
